6 Geordie foods to try while you’re studying in Newcastle

The best part about travelling somewhere new is trying out the local cuisine. And why should going to a new place for university be any different? Like many cities in the UK, Newcastle upon Tyne has a handful of local dishes that you simply must try if you’re a term-time Geordie. You might need to dedicate time to seeking out some of these hearty and traditional dishes, whereas others can be found right on the high street. So, here are six ‘Geordie’ classics you must try while you’re a student in the ‘Toon.

1. Greggs pasty

A real gem of the North East is definitely Gregg’s Bakery. Founded in 1951 by John Gregg in Gosforth, Greggs is known for selling its legendary pasties (savoury puff pastry with a hot filling), as well as other snacks like donuts, biscuits, sandwiches, soup and salads. There are around 30 Greggs in Newcastle, so you’ll never be far from a pastry, whether you’re after a lunchtime snack or a post night-out treat (some branches are open ‘til after midnight!). It’s a must for any Newcastle newbie.

2. Stottie cake

A stottie cake is a heavy, stodgy bread that can be found in most North Eastern bakeries. As a staple delicacy, stotties were once a cheap bread made by working-class families, but are now a regional treasure found in 126 Gregg’s Bakeries around the North East! So, if you’re after a lunchtime sandwich in between lectures, then a Gregg’s stottie will definitely fill you up!

3. Newcastle Brown Ale

A big favourite amongst locals is definitely Newcastle’s Brown Ale. First brewed in 1921, this dark ale can be found all over the city and is famously drank from the bottle. However, Newcastle University’s own Luther’s Bar sells the Newcastle classic both in bottles and on draught. It’s the best way to wash down a stottie, a pasty... you get the picture!

4. Pease pudding

Pease Pudding is another favourite made from yellow split peas, onions, potatoes and seasoning. This savoury dish, described by Hodemedod’s as “Geordie Hummus”, is typically eaten in sandwiches or with pork. For a fancy feast that includes a taste of the classic Northern dish, Blackfriars restaurant on Friars Street in Newcastle offer Pease Pudding as part of their Banquet Set Menu.

5. Saveloy dip

Heard of a sausage sandwich? Well a Saveloy Dip is exactly that, but with a twist; a smoked sausage in a bread roll, dunked in gravy and wrapped in Pease Pudding, with stuffing and mustard. Originating from South Tyneside, you may need to take the metro to a Tyneside butchers to find yourself a Saveloy sensation, but it’s totally worth the trip. Or, this deep-fried dip recipe takes Saveloy to a new level.

6. Pan Haggerty

So, Pan Haggerty may sound a bit odd, but it's basically North Eastern dauphinoise potatoes; a potato dish with onions and cheese. Often paired with bacon and egg, Pan Haggerty can be found at Hinnie’s Restaurant in Newcastle’s Whitley Bay which is famous for its traditional Geordie comfort food. Here you'll also find other traditional dishes like Singin’ Hinnies, Pease Pudding and ales from Newcastle-based Mordue and Wylam breweries.
