Being a foodie on a student budget can be difficult.

Unless, that is, if you’re studying in Southampton.

We’ve listed the very best budget eateries the city has to offer, and a couple of mid-range ones for special occasions too.

ON A BUDGET

1) It’s a Pizza Thing

It started life as a food truck and did so well that it now has a permanent home on Adelaide Road.

This cosy spot serves artisan wood fired pizza and local real ale and craft beer.

The perfect place to spend an evening with your flatmates.

2) The Art House

This vegan and vegetarian café is largely run by volunteers and promises to be ‘different from anywhere you’ve ever been’.

Burritos, Greek snack plates, pizza, cakes – the menu is as eclectic as the entertainment on offer. The Art House hosts open mic nights, workshops, gallery exhibitions and sells vintage clothing too!

You can satisfy your hunger and inner creative on Above Bar Street, just 8 minutes from our student accommodation: Liberty Quays.

3) White Star Tavern

This swanky-looking pub has won plenty of awards, so you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s out of your budget. However, the breakfast and lunch menu is affordable with plenty of dishes under £10.

A top spot if you’re after homemade gastro-pub grub in a gorgeous setting.

White Star Tavern is a 20-minute walk or bus journey from Liberty Point

4) Café Thrive

Café Thrive believes that ‘good food shouldn’t cost the Earth’ – evidenced by its fully plant-based menu and reasonable prices.

Take your pick from burgers, salads, sandwiches, pizzas and some delicious dairy-free sundaes and milkshakes.

Café Thrive is 8 minutes from Liberty Quays

5) Piecaramba!

Firstly, great name.

Set in a medieval wool-house, this striking pub is the ideal setting for a fun night out with friends and makes for a great date location too.

The food is Deep-South inspired and bursting with flavour. Think cornbread, gumbo stew, sticky chicken wings, aka, comfort food heaven.

Wash it all down with their house-brewed beer and say hi to the adorable resident dog, Mr Watson.

You can find it on Town Quay, 13 minutes from Liberty Quay.
