8 ways to turn your frown upside down on Blue Monday

The Christmas festivities are over, and January is upon us, which for most students means going back to university and facing exam after exam. To top it all off, next Monday, January 15th, has officially been named the 'most depressing day of the year.' When did everything become so bleak? But wait! Not everything has to be doom and gloom. Here are a few simple ways to brighten your Blue Monday…

1. Book a post-exam break

January is the best time of year to get cheap holidays and even cheaper flights, so take advantage while you can. You’ll reap the benefits of having something to look forward to after revising hard for your exams and churning out assignments. Sun, sand and sea here you come!

2. Catch up with your flatmates

Christmas has been all about spending time with your family. Now is the perfect time to go out for a meal and catch up with your friends who you may not have seen over the festive period. Have a laugh, share the Christmas gossip and eat delicious food. What’s not to love?

3. Make furry friends at an animal café

Cute cat

If you love felines, canines AND cake, then visit an up-and-coming dog or cat café. You'll be full of cheer after spending a tea and cake-fueled afternoon making furry friends.

4. Check out the January sales

Stop, drop everything and hit the shops! You can find the best bargains in the January sales, and don’t even have to leave your home if you opt to shop online. If you’re really savvy, you may even be able to get ahead for next Christmas and buy some bargain gifts.

5. Take up a new class

New class

There are so many different classes you can try and societies you can join, from language classes to empowering Pilates and even laughing yoga. How about joining the wackiest society available at your university? Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!

6. Treat yourself

This could be a spa package, a new item of clothing, or even a well-earned takeaway with your flatmates. The littlest things can lead to the happiest moments.

7. Buy tickets to see your favourite band

Now that we're well into the New Year, we can really start looking forward to a long summer of festivals, concerts and music tours. Start scouting out the top festivals to go to this summer and secure your tickets. If tickets are too much, pick a gig instead!

8. Laugh it off

There is nothing better than laughing so much it hurts, so why not go to a comedy show? For a free stand-up show, look out for open mic nights near you.

How's that Blue Monday frown doing now? Firmly upside down, we hope!
