Clearing – it's not so bad!

Back

Think back to when you were about four or five years old, nervously stumbling into the world of your education. It probably feels like a lifetime ago, and yet that first day was the first of many preparing you for adult life. If you’re an A Level student, everything you’ve worked so hard for over the past 14 years or so could be about to come to a head on one big day: A Level results day.

You know what? I’ve made it sound daunting, haven’t I? You’re probably overwhelmed enough as it is, and just as nervous as you were all those years ago when you wandered into reception class. Don’t worry, I’ll even it out. Want to know a little secret? No matter what happens with your grades on results day, they don’t define you.

Sure, you can be proud if you do really well. If you don’t do as well as you’d hoped though, it doesn’t really say anything about you other than that perhaps Shakespeare or the Periodic Table isn’t really your thing after all. Be proud of the effort you put in, or of the next steps that you take, instead.

If you don’t get into the university of your dreams, I won’t lie – it can be heart-breaking. I’ve had friends go through this same experience and they were gutted. However, you have options out there, and you’re not a failure. This might just be a sign that you’re destined for other exciting things!

When some students don’t do well, they go into full time work. Some resit their exams (just like my sister did!), and others decide they’d like to take a year out to travel or learn new skills before they figure out their ‘forever career’. To be honest, you’re usually about 18 years old when you get your A Level results… it’s kind of odd to assume you definitely know what you’ll be happiest doing when you’re 40 years old. A lot changes in that time, and you need to do what’s best for you. Like I said in my own blog recently, we all carve our individual path in life for ourselves, nobody else.

A lot of people who don’t get the grades they’d hoped for realise that actually, they are still pretty good at the subjects they always wanted to do and that actually, maybe they just fell down in their exams.

Other people realise that maybe their original course wasn’t right for them because they didn’t do so well in that subject, but one of their other results was higher than expected and so that’s where their true passion lies.

That’s where ‘clearing’ comes in. It’s a process used by loads of students who missed out on a university place, but plenty of other spots at great universities do become available. You can look at the list on UCAS and try and find the right one for you so that you don’t lose hope of still getting a degree, if that’s what you want.

When you’re going down the clearing route, it’s important to think about a few things. What do you actually want to do? Where do you want to go? You also have to consider a bunch of things like whether you’re just going with the university that wants you – trust me, you have to want to be there as well, or you might end up miserable. Nobody’s got time for that!

With so many decisions to be made, you don’t need the added headache when choosing where to live once you’ve made your choice. Liberty Living’s student accommodation makes the idea of a last-minute move to a new city quick and painless! We’ve still got availability in Bristol, Liverpool, Newcastle, Preston and Southampton and many other cities where people get offered places through clearing. You can check the clearing page on our website to see which rooms we have left.

When you book a room with Liberty Living, it’s easy and convenient and you can do it online too. So, whilst you worry about sorting your new path in life (like every student… clearing or not!), you don’t have to worry about your student accommodation with Liberty Living.

Sometimes things don’t work out the way we planned… and sometimes that’s for the best.
