Don’t miss the Olympic torch as it passes by your student housing
To the catchy tune of the title song in the musical Cabaret: what good is sitting alone in your room, come see the torch relay, life is a torch relay, old chum, come to the torch relay! The Olympic torch is on its ritual journey around the UK, carried by 8,000 selected torchbearers, and if it hasn’t graced your city already, the chances are it is just around the corner from your student accommodation. You are about to become part of history.
Lucky you, living in top cities in the UK during such an exciting summer. Liberty Living student houses happen to be in some great positions to witness the torch as it makes its 70-day relay before arriving at the Olympic Stadium in London on 27 July for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Games.
The ritual of the Olympic Flame goes back to the grassroots of the Olympics in Ancient Greece, where a flame would burn at the altar of the goddess Hera for the duration of the Games. This year, as every year, it was lit from the rays of the sun at the Temple of Hera in Olympia. The torch travelled briefly around Greece, and was then ceremoniously handed over to the host city. David Beckham, a London 2012 ambassador, brought the Olympic Flame from Athens to the UK. Now it is in the hands of a team of torchbearers, inspirational people who were nominated to carry it as a symbol of unity from one city to the next.
Don’t miss the chance to cheer on the torchbearers and see the effect of this ancient ritual on the towns and cities across the UK, wherever your student homes happen to be. Here’s a handy Liberty Living torch diary, showing the dates the torch is arriving near you. So do be sure you’re out and about, and ready to witness the Olympic tradition that is lighting up the nation and bringing people together. Life is a torch relay, old chum.
