Halls or house? Here’s what students said about both

Back

So, you’ve made a bunch of new friends at university? Great! And you’ve got a pretty clear idea of who you would (and wouldn’t) like to live with next year? Even better. Except there’s just one small doubt in your mind… Do you want to stay in student halls or find a house?

Well, we surveyed 2,000 students to find out how they rate both student halls and houses. The students we surveyed had lived in a range of places; some had only lived in halls, others in houses, and some in both.

Students surveyed

Who, what and where?

Unsurprisingly, where they had lived before taking the survey had a big impact on how our respondents rated both student halls and houses…

Students who had only lived in student halls

  • 29% rated safety and security as the number one benefit of living in halls
  • 19% said they might be put off living in halls again because of not getting to choose who to live with

Students who had only lived in student houses

  • 30% rated getting to choose who to live with as the number one benefit of living in a house
  • 31% said they’d be put off living in a house again because of having to share a bathroom with others

Students who had lived in both halls and houses

  • 20% rated getting to meet lots of people as the top benefit of living in halls
  • 36% rated getting to choose who to live with as the top benefit of living in a student house
  • 21% said that they’d be put off living in halls because of not getting to choose who to live with
  • 41% said that they’d be put off living in a student house again due to dealing with the landlord or letting agent for repairs or other maintenance issues

So, meeting new people and choosing who to live with are both pretty important to students? Duh! Well, if you have your heart set on halls but know you want to live with your friends, you can book a shared flat with your besties by contacting the residence where you’d like to live.

The benefits of halls

The age factor

The students that took part in our survey fell into one of three age brackets; 17-21-year-olds, 22-26-year-olds or those aged over 27. But how did different ages rate halls and houses?

Well, the majority across all ages ranked safety and security as the top benefit of living in halls. And houses? The majority (37%) of younger students aged 17-21 ranked choosing who to live with as the top benefit of living in a student house, whereas the majority (39-40%) of students aged 22+ ranked independence as the top benefit of living in a student house.

The majority (36-41%) of students of all ages also said that dealing with the landlord or letting agent for repairs or other maintenance issues would put them off living in a student house. Most landlords and letting agents have contacts they can call on to come and fix maintenance issues, but they’re not always available when you need them. Our residences all have on-site maintenance teams that are quick to fix any issues that may occur, so there’s no need to wait around for the landlord’s handyman to arrive from the other side of the city.

The gender agenda

When it came to their gender, students had different priorities…

Gender

  • 24% of male students rated being able to meet lots of people as the top benefit of living in halls
  • 32% of female students rated safety and security as the top benefit of living in halls
  • 37% of male students rated choosing who to live with as the top benefit of living in a house
  • 37% of female students rated independence as the top benefit of living in a house

So, social life and safety came out as top priorities for students. On friends and flatsharing, one student commented...

“You can have the best time in a flatshare/halls, making friends for life”

And another said...

“Your flatmates may become some of your closest friends”

The top 5 benefits of living in halls, as voted for by students:

  • Safety (28%)
  • Bills (23%)
  • Easy to meet lots of people (20%)
  • Location (14%)
  • Housekeeping (5%)
  • Social events, cost, supportive staff, parcel collection service (10%)
