Vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Newcastle
With 1 in 3 Brits stopping or reducing their meat consumption, it’s no surprise that some of our UK cities are stepping up to meet the demand for more plant-based eateries.
Luckily, Newcastle-upon-Tyne has plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants for us students to try.
Here are five of its best.
Humpit is a Mediterranean and middle-eastern inspired ‘Hummus bar’ which celebrates everything chick-peas and falafel.
Offering filled hummus pitas, salads, hummus bowls and shakshuka, Humpit can be exclusively found in Newcastle University’s Student’s Union on King’s Road (15 minutes' walk from our student accommodation: Liberty Central).
If you’re crazy for hummus, lentils and veggies, and fancy a quick vegan lunch fix between lectures, then this spot may be for you.
(They also offer frequent student deals!)
2. Super Natural Café
This little spot on Grainger Street offers exactly what it says on the tin: completely natural vegan and vegetarian dishes.
Located near Central Station, this cosy eatery offers everything from breakfasts, paninis, salads, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, all suitable for vegans.
Their drinks and alcoholic beverages are also vegan approved so you can spend the whole of lunch and pre-drinks with Super Natural Kitchen.
3. Karma Kitchen Café
If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine then Karma Kitchen Café and Takeaway in Bigg Market is definitely worth a try - 10 minutes from our Liberty Quay Studios accommodation.
Karma is a family-run Geordie business with years of experience in plant-based Punjabi dishes.
They offer both delivery and collection services and provide an extensive meat-free menu with all the classic favourites yet with jackfruit, tofu, lentils, veggies and chickpeas as meat substitutes.
4. Tea Sutra Teahouse
Tea Sutra is located on Leazes Park Road and prides itself on both its tasty plant-based lunches AND its selection of over 100 fine, rare and organic teas from around the globe.
Here you can sit back, relax and escape the hustle and bustle of Newcastle’s city centre.
This place is perfect for that well-deserved revision break!
5. The Ship Inn
The Ship Inn is your traditional English, family and dog-friendly pub, serving cask-ales, good hearty food with outdoor seating.
But, perhaps unlike your traditional English pub, the Ship Inn in Ouseburn offers a completely vegan menu.
As one of the oldest pubs in the area, The Ship ties itself to modern trends with vegan curries, breakfasts, burgers and falafel since a change in management back in 2016.
While not all their cask-ales are vegan, their food selection is!
