Bedford for students

Bedford is super close to London, which will put you at the envy of all your friends when you move here. It’s a popular, vibrant place and it has plenty of its own merits aside from the London factor, too.

As a historic Saxon town, Bedford has a rather more rural backdrop than the concrete jungle that is the capital, offering an entirely different experience to its neighbouring counterpart. Tourists, locals, and of course, students alike all love the scenery down by the Great River Ouse, complete with its shopping and beautiful gardens which come alive in the summer.

Our student accommodation in Bedford will ensure that you’re able to make the most of your time as a student. On campus at the University of Bedfordshire and centrally located to the main attractions of the town, you’re in a perfect place so that you'll never miss out on the action.

Eating out

Bedford has got you covered on basically every cuisine you could imagine, from anywhere on the planet, and with a prominent Italian community it specialises in Italian food! It’s also excellent for Asian, particularly Thai!

On a budget? No worries, Bedford has struggling students covered. There are plenty of lunch deals on offer every day of the week.

For some pub grub with added culture, you’ll want The Embankment. The whole place is a Mock-Tudor affair and its formed part of the landscape for over a century. With a seasonal menu, it’s that little bit special, and you can enjoy a taste at almost any time of day.

Things to do

Bedford has been a market town since the Middle Ages, meaning there’s loads of different markets in the square you can head down to, especially for your independent fix. Harpur Centre is the big high-street retailer in the town where you’ll find anything you need.

At the absolute heart of Bedford is the beautiful and quaint Great River Ouse which has many restaurants nearby, as does the Riverside which is the modern part of Bedford – it’s the perfect place to spend a day with your flatmates.

In the evenings, Bedford springs to life! There are pubs everywhere, as well as lots of bars and clubs for that big student night out. As it’s a small town, you’ll soon find your faves in no time and you won’t have far to go back to our student housing in Bedford afterwards.

Arts & culture

The Higgins Art Gallery & Museum is the main one in the area, and it’s great for soaking up some of the local culture. St Paul’s Church and St Peter’s Church are two of the lovely landmarks at the heart of the town and there’s also Bedford Castle Mound, to remind us of the castle which once stood there (despite the fact that these days it’s a mere archaeological dream).

At night, why not take in some theatre? The South Bank Arts Centre and Bedford Theatre cater to all kinds of artistic tendencies, so you’ll never be bored!

When it comes to music, don’t worry, you won’t be feeling abandoned. You can hit up Esquires and Bedford Corn Exchange for your live fix, as well as loads more places in the surrounding towns and cities.

Health & wellbeing

For a brisk stroll around town, head to The Embankment, a pedestrian walk following the Great River Ouse. Walking through, you’ll see the Butterfly Bridge and the War Memorial.

Getting fit is super easy too, as there are plenty of gyms around town. Bedford International Athletic Stadium is one of the finest facilities in the country, covering all your track and field needs, as well as many other exciting sports including football, basketball and martial arts.

Bedford also has a lot of water sports for you to stick your oar into, including the Bedford Rowing Club and the Robinson Pool.

Finally, daredevils should check out Twinwoods Adventure which is suitable for all!

Getting around

The centre of Bedford is ridiculously easy to walk around, so you have no excuses if you’re able to do so! There’s also a popular bus service which travels throughout the city and beyond, and Stagecoach operates several different routes throughout the area, covering almost everywhere.

Like most good student towns, Bedford is served well by a taxi rank and several different taxi apps, so you’ll never struggle getting back to our private student accommodation, no matter the time of day or night.

Of course, if you want to go further afield, it’s very easy to do so. There are two train stations, it’s considered part of the London commuter belt and it’s also got its very own National Express stop so you can go almost anywhere you fancy.
