A great place to study
Bedford is super close to London, which will put you at the envy of all your friends when you move here. It’s a popular, vibrant place and it has plenty of its own merits aside from the London factor, too.
As a historic Saxon town, Bedford has a rather more rural backdrop than the concrete jungle that is the capital, offering an entirely different experience to its neighbouring counterpart. Tourists, locals, and of course, students alike all love the scenery down by the Great River Ouse, complete with its shopping and beautiful gardens which come alive in the summer.
There are six campuses at the University of Bedfordshire, and there are 23,000 students here representing over 100 countries. It’s a cosmopolitan area with a young vibe and there are loads of places to go to see both in the day and at night.
Food and drink
Bedford has got you covered on basically every cuisine you could imagine, from anywhere on the planet. With a prominent Italian community it has great Italian food. Pizzeria Santaniello was the first Italian in the area, dating back to 1980. Spaghetti John’s is less traditional but still very authentic.
For some pub grub with added culture, you’ll want The Embankment. The whole place is a Mock-Tudor affair and its formed part of the landscape for over a century. With a seasonal menu, it’s that little bit special, and you can enjoy a taste at almost any time of day.
On a budget? No worries, we’ve got the struggling students covered. Head to Harpur’s restaurant and wine bar for a ‘Credit Crunch Lunch’.
Thai Lagoon is also worth a mention – despite its rather pricey set menu at £20, it’s more than worth the money! Offering, as you might imagine, authentic Thai delicacies; maybe it’s one for when your parents come to stay?
Sports and leisure
Whether you want to keep fit or just watch others do the same, Bedford has you covered.
There are also loads of gyms across the town, including Flexibility Gym, which basically has everything you can want without a nasty and impossible-to-leave contract.
Bedford International Athletic Stadium is one of the finest facilities in the country, covering all your track and field needs, as well as many other exciting sports including football, basketball and martial arts.
Bedford also has a ton of water sports for you to stick your oar into, including the Bedford Rowing Club, and the Robinson Pool. If you’re after something a little quirkier to cool down, you need to check out the Oasis Beach Pool on the outskirts. Self-styled as a bit of a tropical paradise, this pool with a difference draws people from all over!
Daredevils should also check out Bodyflight Bedford, the world’s largest indoor skydiving facility, suitable for all!
Culture and music
St Paul’s Church and St Peter’s Church are two of the lovely landmarks at the heart of Bedford. There’s also Bedford Castle Mound, which reminds us of the castle which once stood there, but it’s a wonderful archaeological dream.
You can also visit The Embankment, a pedestrian walk following the River Ouse. Walking through, you’ll see the Butterfly Bridge and the War Memorial, and The Embankment is a worthy reward at the end of your one mile journey.
Finally, Bedford Park is a sight to behold, hosting everything from sport through to a bandstand. You’ll see it truly come alive over summer!
When it comes to music, don’t worry, you won’t be feeling abandoned. You can hit up Esquires and Bedford Corn Exchange for your live fix, as well as tons more places in the surrounding towns and cities.
At night, why not go and take in some theatre? The South Bank Arts Centre and Bedford Theatre cater to all kinds of artistic tendencies, so you’ll never be bored!
There are also lots of cute pubs you can head to, including The Embankment, but also The Horse and Jockey and plenty of others.
For bars and clubs for that big student night out, head to Bar Citrus or Empire, for just a taste of what’s out there! As it’s a small town, you’ll soon find your faves in no time.
The centre of Bedford is ridiculously easy to walk around, so you have no excuses for being lazy! There’s also a popular bus service in the X5 which travels throughout the city and beyond. Stagecoach also operates 11 different routes throughout the area, covering almost everywhere.
Like most good student towns, Bedford is served well by a taxi rank, so you’ll never struggle getting back to our student accommodation, no matter the time of day or night.
Of course, if you want to go further afield, it’s very easy to do so. There are two train stations, it’s considered part of the London commuter belt and it’s also got its very own National Express stop so you can go almost anywhere you fancy.
Health and wellbeing
In Bedford, both your physical and emotional health and well-being are covered. There’s Bedford Hospital, to cater to any needs to you have, and Bedford University also has plenty of care and advice as well. If you’re going through mental health issues, need disability support, counselling, financial help or anything else, it’s covered.
There are also many different areas to help in the community and practice faith, and there are people on hand to deal with any course related problems you might encounter as well.
Bedford has been a market town since the Middle Ages, meaning there’s loads of different markets in the square you can head down to, especially for your independent fix. Harpur Centre is the surprisingly big high-street retailer in the town, and there you’ll find anything you need.
In terms of your local essentials, our Bedford student accommodation is situated right by supermarkets, banks and so on, so we’ll never leave you hungry. On that note, there are also plenty of takeaways in the area, too!
It’s a bit of a given that if you go to University in Bedford, you’re going to go to London at some point. Easily reached, it’s got tons to do, whether you want to go be a tourist for the day, have a night out, or get a ton of shopping done!
Also close to Bedford is Milton Keynes, which has plenty of things to do. If that’s not enough, there are two train stations so you can basically head off anywhere you like with your Liberty Living flatmates.
Whatever you’re looking for, you will find it with Liberty Living in Bedford.

Liberty Living operates in accordance with the National Code of Standards for student accommodation. The Code of Standards is run by ANUK (The Accreditation Network UK), the NUS, and Unipol Student Homes, and is supported by universities across the UK.
Liberty Living joined the Code of Standards to give our students peace of mind. You can be assured that you will enjoy a high standard of living in accordance with the Code of Standards, and a prompt resolution to problems should they ever occur when you stay at any of Liberty Living’s residences.
Liberty Living follow a distinct set of standards for our student accommodation, called the ANUK/Unipol National Codes. The purpose of these Codes, (membership of which is voluntary), is to provide students with professional housing services.
The standards chosen for the Codes reflect a balance of common sense obligations and responsibilities between landlords and tenants. They also reflect established best practice in the sector and are based on what an average student and their parents would expect of a good quality housing supplier. The standards are supported by the voice of students themselves through the National Union of Students.
What does being a member of the codes mean?
- Both parties can enjoy the benefits of good standards of housing management and practice.
- Misunderstandings and disputes are reduced.
- If problems do occur they can be promptly resolved.
- The independent complaints procedure operated by the Codes can be used for complaint resolution.
