Founded by Royal Charter in 1883, Cardiff University has been producing successful graduates for the past 130 years. Cardiff University is a global community. International students comprise 13 per cent of the total student population. Government performance indicators show that Cardiff University’s students are more likely to succeed in their studies, with first-year completion rates considerably higher than averages in the UK. In recent years, substantial investment has been made in the University estate, including building of a third science and innovation campus. Sunday Times Good University Guide 2013 praised Cardiff University as “one of the best institutions in Britain.”
Location and facilities
The city of Cardiff offers an excellent location for students to study in. Students benefit from the combination of a small, friendly, inexpensive city with the cultural and recreational amenities of an ambitious and progressive capital city. Students in Cardiff lead a busy life, both with their academic studies and the social activities that take place.
As the capital city of Wales, it is home to many of the UK’s national institutions including the National Museum of Wales and the commanding Principality Stadium. The waterfront area at Cardiff Bay is home to the Welsh Assembly and the Wales Millennium Centre arts complex. There are regular food, arts and craft festivals and visitors can walk across the barrage or take a boat trip around the bay. You can also find stunning national parks and beautiful beaches just 30 minutes away from Cardiff, and with over 600 castles in Wales!
The University itself is spread across two campuses: Cathays Park and Heath Park. Majority of Cardiff University students are based at Cathays Park, as it is situated in the very centre of Cardiff.
There are 3,000 study spaces in conveniently placed libraries and 25 IT suites plus widespread Wi-Fi access. Sports facilities including a training village, an exercise studio and sports pitches are located on four sites across both campuses. Cardiff’s Students’ Union offers a variety of entertainment options, diverse clubs and societies and a comprehensive range of welfare, advice and information services, all aspects of student life within a purpose-built complex.
Cardiff University has over 350 degree programmes offering choice and flexibility. Cardiff University admits approximately 5,000 undergraduate entrants each year. 95.5% of Cardiff University students are employed or in further study 6 months after graduation (HESA Destinations of Leavers Survey 2014).

Our dedicated Student Experience programme has been created to ensure that every single one of you has the best stay possible when you live with us. Whether it is coming along to our social events and activities to meet new people, getting involved in fundraising and volunteering for some amazing charities, or popping along to drop in sessions to seek advice on finances, wellbeing and careers, we have something for you.
We understand that University can sometimes be an overwhelming experience, but don’t worry our team are great at giving advice on and mediating in all kinds of welfare issues that you may experience, such as homesickness, difficulty in getting on with flatmates, noise complaints, relationship problems, partying too hard and having trouble with studies.
