Eating out

As a student, it’s important to refuel. Glasgow is the perfect place to eat as a student because there’s simply so much choice. In the city centre, you’ll find your usual chains as well as independent offerings and even American imports.

Down in the West End (the hip hangout for students), there are loads of delicious places to eat. Here, delectable tapas, traditional Scottish food and almost every other kind of cuisine can be found, and there’s a real mix of casual and formal dining options. This is a perfect area to bring your parents, because it’s equally classy as it is quirky.

Glasgow does Indian cuisine really, really well, so you won’t be disappointed no matter where you choose. There’s also an eclectic range of bistros and cafés to choose from across the city, all close to our Glasgow student accommodation.

Things to do

Glasgow is one of the best locations in the UK for shopping, with all the high street chains you could ever want, right through to exclusive, chic boutiques, up-and-coming designers, independent stores and more. Head to Buchanan Galleries, Princes Square and Merchant City, or if you’re a little more budget-conscious, try one of the markets instead.

Cinemas aren’t lacking, and you’ll even find the tallest cinema in the world at Cineworld as well as two independents, meaning you’ll be able to catch the biggest and best releases throughout the city – and all just a stone’s throw from our private student accommodation in Glasgow.

There are loads of student-friendly night spots throughout the city, from some of Glasgow’s biggest clubs through to multi-storey alternative venues. It’s also pretty good for karaoke as well if that’s up your street!

Arts & culture

Whether you want art, theatre, music or something else, Glasgow has you culturally covered! Home of the Scottish Opera, the Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, there’s loads to do to try something new, or even to impress your parents when they visit.

Glasgow has some incredible architecture, and it’s something the city is famed for, as is Charles Rennie Mackintosh – the revered artist. There are also loads of theatres and visual arts venues as well as over 30 different museums and galleries dotted across the city, so you should never get stuck for things to do!

Live music is a major deal in Glasgow, reflected in the sheer number of concert venues. The SECC hosts many major international artists, but there’s also Barrowland Ballroom, the O2 Academy, and King Tut’s Wah Wah hosting a diverse array of acts.

Health & wellbeing

Walking around Glasgow is absolutely charming, and there are plenty of places within the city that’ll offer a little bit of an oasis from the bright lights. Kelvingrove Park is situated in the West End, and it’s a lovely space to spend an entire day.

Glasgow hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2018 European Championships, so it’s a city which integrates sport into its heart seamlessly. There are facilities galore which are open to students. In fact, there are loads of different sports to get involved with in the city, including skiing on one of the city’s two dry ski slopes.

If you just want to go to a gym, Glasgow has plenty. There are also lots of facilities on the different campuses, plus help for a range of health issues as well.

Getting around

Getting around cheaply and efficiently is more than possible in Glasgow, so you can make the right decision to suit you. The buses are cheap and reliable, and there’s a safe and easy-to-catch underground system throughout the city, too – taking you around the city limits for a very fair price.

Trains are also available to local destinations and those further afield. You can use your national railcard if you've got one on loads of routes in and around Glasgow and beyond. Glasgow also has its very own airport, which will take you to UK destinations as well as those much further away.
