  1. Social scenes

We get it – you’re a student, but there’s more to life than studying. You want to be surrounded by exciting things and plenty to do. Thankfully, there are loads of bars, pubs and nightlife on your doorstep when you stay at Liberty Plaza. This diverse area of East London has plenty restaurants and pubs, with some student favourites just on your doorstep – so it’s pretty handy!

You’ll be in heaven if Asian cuisine is your thing; you’re just a 14 minute walk from the delights of Brick Lane, and you’ve got many Indian restaurants before you even make your way over there too, including Halal Restaurant and The Empress. If all that sounds a bit too hot to handle, there are some great places around the area, thanks in part to the fact that the residence is at the hub of commercial activity in London. For lunch, you can walk 10 minutes and try Tossed, Itsu, Tortilla, or Soupe du Jour, or of course, the trusty Pret a Manger. Dinner options include Abbey Bar, Thai Square or The Slug and Lettuce. Finally, if you feel like a short walk, nearby Spitalfields has loads of awesome places to try, including the quirky The Breakfast Club.

Central London is only a short train ride away, but before you even have to venture down there, you should give some of the up-and-coming local areas a try. Hoxton and Shoreditch are both close by and are fun, vibrant areas, with lots of nightlife, bars and even art galleries. The area of Islington is also only up the road at just 15 minutes on the bus, and there’s loads to do, including places to eat and drink on Upper Street. You’ll also range of music venues throughout these areas, including The Old Blue Last, The O2 Academy, The Garage and plenty more.

You can also sample a range of fun places throughout the surrounding areas, like XOYO in Shoreditch and more.

  2. What's around

The area of Whitechapel has a range of local amenities which are super simple for you to access. The nearest supermarket is Sainsbury’s; it’s literally on your doorstep and you can’t miss it. You’ve also got a couple of Tesco Express stores and even Petticoat Lane Markets for some bargains just minutes from the residence.

In terms of shopping, you’ll want to head to One New Change, just down the road at Moorgate. It’s got student faves like H&M and student dining staples like Nando’s, but also some slightly posher stuff like All Saints for when you want to treat yourself. Shoreditch also isn’t too far away at all, and you ought to visit BoxPark; a series of edgy pop-up shops in giant boxes specialising in fashion and accessories.

Liberty Plaza sits in the heart of London’s East End with its cosmopolitan vibe. The residence straddles both quirky, edgy areas like Shoreditch, Hoxton, Whitechapel and Islington, and yet is also only minutes from the hustle and bustle of the City of London and the corporate world.

The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre and hosts classical and contemporary music concerts, theatre performances and art exhibitions and is only 25 minutes’ walk from your new home.

For more cultural fun, The Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe are just over a thirty minute walk away or short tube journey. You’ve also got absolutely iconic places like London Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, The Gherkin, The Shard and The Tower of London within 30 minutes’ walk in each direction. You can even do a Jack The Ripper walking tour, as the area is where he was on the prowl all those years ago – don’t worry, he’d be long dead now!

Further afield via tube you will find everything else that London has to offer such as the shops of Oxford Street, the delights of Camden Market or Soho and of course, the touristy places like The London Eye and Westminster, where there is an array of sights to be seen.

Remember, you’re here to learn (technically), so it helps to be close to your University or College. London has literally hundreds of these and we can cater to them all, but as an idea, University College London is 15 minutes away by public transport, University of the Arts and Kings College London just 10 minutes away, and Queen Mary University at 15 minutes away on the tube.

Finally, if you just fancy staying in, there’s a brilliant common room, music studios, a gym and great facilities throughout Liberty Plaza to keep you entertained.

  3. Getting active

Liberty Plaza is the perfect place to get fit, thanks to its inclusive gym which you don’t have to pay a penny extra for. We also have an amazing dance studio for you to use whenever you like, whether you’re choreographing a routine or setting up your own exercise classes with your flatmates. You’ll also be able to bike around, thanks to our super-safe cycle storage facility.

Alternatively, if you fancy a swim you can head to Mulberry Sports and Leisure Centre as well as Virgin Active, or for more advance gym needs, you’ve got a range of choices such as Whitechapel Sports Centre, Anytime Fitness, Fitness First or Fit4Less.

London is especially good for offering a range of classes, and you can try everything from Zumba to Hot Yoga in your new local area.

  4. Travel and transport

Imagine living in the heart of pretty much everything? At Liberty Plaza, that’s basically what you’ll be doing. You’re just minutes from several tube stations, including Aldgate East (a 4 minute walk away), Tower Hill (10 minutes away on foot) – both on the District and Circle Line with Aldgate East also offering the Hammersmith & City line – and even Liverpool Street which can take you even further afield, just a 20 minute walk away. King’s Cross St Pancras can be reached quickly and offers a quick trip to loads of places around the UK and even Europe on the Eurostar.

London is not all about the tube, there are also loads of practically door-to-door bus services for this area, including:

    • 205 – Heading to places like Angel, King’s Cross & Marylebone
    • 25 – Heading to Stratford Westfield or St Paul's Cathedral
    • 15 – Eastbound to Canary Wharf, or Westbound, into the city towards Westminster

  5. Local amenities

What’s not to love about living in London’s trendy East End?  Liberty Plaza is located within walking distance from Shoreditch, Hoxton and Spitafields markets. Spend your day at the markets walking around the historic streets of Brick Lane and discover the many galleries, great restaurants and cafes. There are trendy bars all around and all within easy access from many of the city’s best universities and art colleges.

The Tower of London and the River Thames are a short walk away with lots of additional restaurants and bars to visit.

Local supermarkets are all on hand from Sainsbury’s right next door to Waitrose and Marks and Spencer within easy reach.

The City of London is located close by and offers a variety of banks and a large Post Office. You can wander round the amazing contemporary buildings with the buzz of the city and really feel you have arrived in London.

  6. Your wellbeing

In case of an emergency, The Royal London Hospital is right around the corner at less than 15 minutes’ walk away. St Bartholomew’s Hospital is also close enough, at around 30 minutes’ walk from the residence. Of course, if you’re ever unfortunate enough to be in an extreme situation, you can call 999 and you will be taken by ambulance instead. We hope it never comes to this!

The team at Liberty Plaza will be happy to give advice to students on the nearest doctor surgeries and dentists in the area. There are loads of pharmacies around and plenty of specialist services, including sexual health clinics and more.

Our student accommodation is more than four walls and a roof. The Residence Team will ensure that you always feel supported and are there to lend an ear if you need it.
