  1. Social scenes

Liberty Central is super centrally located, right in the heart of the metropolitan city of Manchester. The residence is only moments from the city centre, and is ridiculously close to several of the local universities. It’s literally on the doorstep of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) at a 3 minute walk away, Manchester Metropolitan University just a 6 minute walk away and the University of Manchester at just 10 minutes on foot. Let’s face it – it’s called Liberty Central for a reason.

Not exactly a culinary genius? Don’t panic, you’re not going to starve. There are some incredible restaurants around the city centre, from low-key eateries to fine dining establishments. Every cuisine from every corner of the world is covered!

The quirky area of town is called the Northern Quarter. It’s very fashionable and has loads of hip places to eat. You only have to walk 20 minutes away and you’ll reach tasty treats such as Dough Pizza KitchenSimpleCane and Grain, and Wood Deli and Wine Bar.

Of course, you won’t be far from your favourite chain restaurants when you’re in Manchester, you’ve got everything from Nando’s to Frankie and Benny’s covered, and even TGI Fridays if you want a special treat.

If Italian food is up your street then you really should check out Gusto. It’s a bit on the pricey side but it’s definitely worth it, and signing up to their free membership scheme gets you a 20% discount. Chinese food is also on the menu in this Northern fortress, and our top pick to check out is Sweet Mandarin.

A night out in Manchester will never be a disappointment – you’ll find something for you, whatever your tastes. Popular areas include Canal Street; famed for being the Gay Village with an all-inclusive LGBTQIA+ friendly vibe, and the Deansgate Locks and Northern Quarter, which are all within a 20 minute walk away from the residence.

Liberty Central is also right next to Oxford Road, which is student central during term times! There’s a real eclectic mix, from Revolution and The Paramount, to Sound Control and more.

There’s such a huge student population in Manchester, so there’s no wonder the student scene is massive! You’ll find somewhere to go every night of the week. You’ve got Gorilla, with international DJs each week, Factory 251 (which costs just 1p to get in), and 42nd Street – perfect for getting down with those indie vibes. Tiger Tiger is an ideal go-to, whereas Satan’s Hollow is perfect for something a little alternative and off the beaten path.

Manchester is well-known for ‘The Warehouse Project’, too. It’s an annual event going on for weeks; and it really puts Manchester on the music map.

  2. What's around

There are so many great universities in Manchester, and you’ll be right next to the major ones. Our Liberty Central student accommodation is minutes from Manchester Business School (MBS), the University of Manchester (UoM), Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).

It’s not all work and no play in Manchester – you’ve got loads to see and do during your free time. It doesn’t matter what you’re into; there’s something for everyone.

Bit of a shopaholic? Manchester’s got your back. There’s everything from high street shopping to boutiques and even designer names, if you’ve got some cash to splash. The Arndale Centre is right in the heart of town, and it’s more than worth a visit. If you’re prepared to venture on out a little, you can also visit the Trafford Centre, too. It’s only 30 minutes on a bus from the city, and it’s got a lot of personality.

Fancy a night of live entertainment? You can catch the very best in music and comedy, right across the city. The Manchester Arena is the major venue in the city, which you can reach in a brisk half hour walk, or 10 minutes in a taxi. Other venues worth checking out are Manchester Academy and the Apollo – you can walk to these easily in around 10 minutes and 20 minutes respectively.

Looking for seasonal fun? You’ll almost certainly want to check out the ‘Pangaea’ festival which is run twice annually by the University of Manchester Student Union. It’s a great way to let your hair down after exams, and you’ll even spot celebrity guests!

Other ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ events which are more than worth keeping an eye out for include Parklife, a major annual music festival. You’ve no excuse not to go if it’s your thing, as it’s only 10 minutes away from your student housing.

Don’t forget the Christmas Markets in Manchester, either –it features ice skating and plenty of quirky little stalls, ideal for choosing Christmas gifts and having some festive fun.

For a healthy dose of culture, you can visit the Manchester Museum, a 5 minutes’ walk from Liberty Central. It’s free to get in, and a great way to learn about archaeology, anthropology and natural history in a relaxed environment.

There are lots of cinemas to choose from around the city if you feel like a night at the movie. HOME offers the best in both contemporary and classic cinema, with a more ‘independent’ style of experience. You can of course also attend the Odeon IMAX in the Printworks, just a half hour walk away from you.

If you prefer drama of a more lifelike variety, you’ll love the Royal Exchange Theatre Company, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra, to name just a few.

If spending time outdoors is more your cup of tea, or you’re just after some peace and quiet, Hulme Park is your best bet – and it’s less than a 15 minute walk from the residence.

  3. Getting active

Like to keep fit? You’ve got plenty of places to workout in your new home away from home. You’ll find great rates for students, and even places that are open 24/7 – 7 days a week. One example is The Gym on Faulkner Street – a 19 minute walk away from Liberty Central.

Both Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs are based within the city limits. Old Trafford (Manchester United’s ground) is approximately 20 minutes’ bus ride away and Manchester City’s (Etihad Stadium) is around 30 minutes away. People here know full well whether they’re a ‘red’ or a ‘blue’, so be sure to check out a local derby game – the atmosphere is electric!

‘Just keep swimming’ is great advice, and luckily in Manchester, you can. The Manchester Aquatics Centre around a 5 minute walk from your new home. It features an Olympic sized swimming pool which was even used during the Commonwealth Games, so you’ll get a lot out of the facilities on offer.

If you’d prefer to be outdoors, there are plenty of open spaces where you can train, run or jog throughout the region. Give the weekly Park Run at Hulme Park a go – it doesn’t cost a penny, and the fact it’s so close to you at a 14 minute walk from the residence means you have no excuses!

  4. Travel and transport

Liberty Central is practically in the heart of Manchester, so walking is always an option for most of the places you may want to go to. Cycling is also a great shout thanks to a lack of hills; keeping you fit and helping you to get around the city faster! However, you do have a range of other options to travel both locally and further afield as well.

The city has bus, tram and train links all over the place for your convenience. The bus system is cheap and reliable; and there’s even a free shuttle bus going around the centre. Your best bet from Liberty Central would either be the numbers 1 or 3, which both go to and from all the popular spots you’ll want to visit.

Manchester Piccadilly train station is only a 20 minute walk away, so you can pop back home to see family or to visit others around the country – that’s if you feel like it! Manchester is just over 1 hour away from Newcastle, 2 hours away from London, and just over 30 minutes from Liverpool, all by train.

If you’re really stretching that student budget, National Express and Megabus both serve Manchester. You can get super-cheap, comfortable seats all over the country from here – just book online!

If you’re an international student or you just fancy a holiday, Manchester International Airport is less than a 20 minute drive away, to the south of the city. You’ll find routes going around the world, so you’re very well connected!

  5. Local amenities

You’ll be in one of the UK’s biggest cities and so finding places to stock your cupboards won’t be an issue at all. You’ve got Tesco, Sainsbury’s and even a Waitrose when it comes to getting bits here and there, and then when you want to do a big shop, you can head to Asda in Hulme – just 10 minutes away if you split a taxi – or Aldi on Urban Exchange, which is just a 15 minute walk away.

High street banks can be found around the city centre, but you’ll find ATMs on almost every corner. There’s also a Post Office and a Bureau de Change in the city centre. Oxford Road is also a vital part of Manchester; just a 5 minute walk away with plenty of amenities and convenience stores on offer.

All of the big universities have libraries on campus, with plenty of resources for you to borrow. You can also try John Ryland’s Library at Deansgate, which is around a 25 minute walk from Liberty Central.

  6. Your wellbeing

All kinds of advice is readily available at any of Manchester’s universities. Whether you need financial support, careers advice, or help with your general welfare – there’ll be someone on hand to help.

Your nearest GP Surgery to Liberty Central is the Vallance Centre; around a 15 minute walk away.

If you need emergency assistance at any time, Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital is only a 16 minute walk away, or less in a taxi. It’s there for urgent matters and specialist services, but it also has a walk-in centre.

At Liberty Central, you’re never alone. The Residence Team are always available and will make every effort possible to make sure you settle in at your new home away from home.

  8. Navigation_pink_Ratings.svg Accreditations

Liberty Living operates in accordance with the National Code of Standards for student accommodation. The Code of Standards is run by ANUK (The Accreditation Network UK), the NUS, and Unipol Student Homes, and is supported by universities across the UK.

Liberty Living joined the Code of Standards to give our students peace of mind. You can be assured that you will enjoy a high standard of living in accordance with the Code of Standards, and a prompt resolution to problems should they ever occur when you stay at any of Liberty Living’s residences.

All of Liberty Living’s residences have been accredited by ANUK and run in accordance with the National Code of Standards.

    National Code of Standards logo

Liberty Living follow a distinct set of standards for our student accommodation, called the ANUK/Unipol National Codes. The purpose of these Codes, (membership of which is voluntary), is to provide students with professional housing services.

The standards chosen for the Codes reflect a balance of common sense obligations and responsibilities between landlords and tenants. They also reflect established best practice in the sector and are based on what an average student and their parents would expect of a good quality housing supplier. The standards are supported by the voice of students themselves through the National Union of Students.

What does being a member of the codes mean?

    • Both parties can enjoy the benefits of good standards of housing management and practice.
    • Misunderstandings and disputes are reduced.
    • If problems do occur they can be promptly resolved.
    • The independent complaints procedure operated by the Codes can be used for complaint resolution.
