  1. Social scenes

Sir Charles Groves Hall is located in a central location, in the metropolitan city of Manchester. The residence is located a few moments from the city centre, and is on the doorstep of the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). The position of the residence means you will never be far from the diverse and exciting social scene the city has to offer.

If you aren’t the greatest chef, or just aren’t in the mood to cook, there are some great restaurants available around the centre. Manchester is one of the biggest cities in the UK, so you will discover a variety of cultures and cuisines.

There are many restaurants in the Northern Quarter Manchester, the fashionable, quirky area of the city centre – just 15 minutes’ walk away and crammed with places to eat. Some tasty favourites include; Dough Pizza Kitchen, Simple, Cane and Grain, and Wood Deli and Wine Bar.

The city centre is also home to a variety of national chain restaurants to suit everyone, including; Nando’s, TGI Friday’s, Frankie and Benny’s and many more.

Manchester has it all when it comes to nightlife; there is literally something for everyone, so you won’t be disappointed. The most popular areas are Canal Street (Manchester’s Gay Village), Deansgate Locks (a 10 minute walk away) and the trendy Northern Quarter (a 15 minute walk away).

Closest to the residence is Oxford Road where you will no doubt find some great bars to hang out in with your friends. Revolution, The Paramount and Sound Control are just to name a few.

With two of the biggest universities, there is no wonder that the student life in Manchester is epic. Some of the city’s best nightclubs are; Tiger Tiger – 8 rooms of fun, Gorilla – introducing international DJs each week, Factory 251 – a bargain at just 1p entry, or 42nd Street – a popular indie club. Manchester is also famous for ‘The Warehouse Project’. The event takes place each year from September through to New Year’s Day and plays host to an array of International famous DJs.

  2. What's around

Located on Booth Street West just off Oxford Road, it is close by the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), Manchester Business School (MBS), the University of Manchester (UoM), and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

Sir Charles Groves Hall is ideally located for students studying at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), but can also accommodate students from Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Manchester, and Manchester Business School.

There is plenty to see and do in Manchester to keep you entertained in your spare time and during weekends. Whatever you’re into there will be something for you.

When it comes to shopping, Manchester certainly does it well; the centre offers an extensive range of high street stores, boutiques and designer shops. Manchester is home to large department stores; Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and House of Fraser. There’s also the Arndale Centre, right in the middle of town. Don’t forget to visit The Trafford Shopping Centre (one of the largest indoor shopping centres in Europe) – a 30 minute bus ride just out of the city centre.

If you enjoy live shows, comedy, gigs and concerts, The MEN Arena is the major gig venue in the city – 12 minutes car ride away. Other venues like this include Manchester Academy and the Apollo – both 15 minutes’ walk from the residence.

Something to look forward to is the ‘Pangaea’ festival which is run twice a year by the University of Manchester Students Union. The festival is a large celebration marking the end of exams, and it always features famous guests.

Other seasonal attractions include Manchester’s Christmas Market (one of the best in the UK) featuring ice skating and hundreds of quaint stalls. The huge festival, Parklife, also runs each year and is 10 minutes away from the accommodation.

For something more culturally enriching, visit the Manchester Museum; 5 minutes’ walk from Sir Charles Groves Hall. It’s free entry and it displays works of archaeology, anthropology and natural history.

There are numerous cinemas around the city including the quirky Cornerhouse on Oxford Street – 5 minutes’ walk away. It has three screens, an art gallery and a cafe. Additionally, Manchester is home to a number of theatres, like the Royal Exchange Theatre Company, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra.

If you enjoy the outdoors, visit Hulme Park; perfect to relax between and after lectures and have a game of Frisbee or a BBQ with friends.

  3. Getting active

If you like to keep fit, there are loads of gyms close by which offer student discounts and great rates. The nearest gym to the accommodation is The Gym on Faulkner Street – 20 minutes’ walk away.

The big question on everyone’s lips in Manchester is ‘are you red or are you blue?’ Both Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs are based in the city. Old Trafford (Manchester United’s ground) is approximately 20 minutes’ bus ride away and Manchester City’s (Etihad Stadium) is around 30 minutes away. If you get chance to see a local derby game, you won’t be disappointed – but be prepared for a few rowdy fans or two!

If you enjoy swimming, the Aquatics Centre is located less than a 5 minute walk from the accommodation and features an Olympic sized swimming pool which was used during the Commonwealth Games.

Alternatively there are plenty of open spaces located south of Manchester if you like running or jogging. Why not try the weekly Park Run at Hulme Park – it’s free and 15 minutes from Sir Charles Groves Hall.

  4. Travel and transport

Liberty Living at Sir Charles Groves Hall is located a few moments from the city centre and a minutes’ walk to the Royal Northern College of Music.

Piccadilly train station is a 20 minute walk away, so popping home or to see friends at the weekend can be done easily – if you can tear yourself away, that is. The city is well served by bus, train and tram and Manchester is just over 1 hour away from Newcastle, and 2 hours away from London.

The bus system in the city is cheap and reliable; you will find a free bus shuttle system which runs through the city centre, and bus numbers 1&3 go to all the main spots in and around the city centre, too.

For a cheaper alternative, National Express and Megabus serve Manchester and go to many UK destinations for a low priced, reasonable fare.

There are also a lack of hills around the city, which means walking and cycling around can be done without too much effort!

For those who live outside the UK; Manchester International Airport is less than a 20 minute drive away, just south of the city. The airport offers a range of widespread routes across the world.

  5. Local amenities

The residence is located within the city centre, a few moments from Oxford Street where you will find a range of small supermarkets to keep your cupboards full, including; Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. For a larger selection, there is an Asda supermarket in Hulme; 10 minutes’ drive away and an Aldi on Urban Exchange – 15 minutes’ walk.

All high street banks can be found around the city centre, as well as a Post Office and a Bureau de Change. Oxford Street is a 5 minute walk away and has a variety of shops, cafes, takeaways and restaurants to choose from.

Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan all have libraries on campus, with all necessary resources you may need. For the nearest library, try John Ryland’s Library at Deansgate, which is a 20 minute walk from Sir Charles Groves Hall.

  6. Your wellbeing

You will be able to receive free confidential advice regarding finances, careers and general welfare when studying at any of Manchester’s universities. Liberty Living at Sir Charles Groves Hall is located close to campus so you will never be too far from the help you may need.

The nearest GP Surgery to the residence is Vallance Centre, less than a 4 minute walk from Sir Charles Groves Hall.

For any emergencies, Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital is a 15 minute walk from the residence and has an A&E unit and a walk-in centre, should you need any urgent medical assistance.

      Book as a group

At Liberty Living we’re really flexible and want you to enjoy your stay in our student accommodation as much as possible. You’ve got loads of choice when it comes to sharing preferences, and you can also opt to stay with your friends, too. No matter how you do it, all you need to do is to provide us with the names and email addresses of the people you’d like to share with. If you would like to find out more before returning to book, take a look at our group bookings page.

    • Navigation_pink_Payments.svg

There are several ways to pay

We get it. Not everybody has huge stacks of cash lying around to pay the rent for the year upfront. If you’ve got some stashed away, that’s fine – we offer a 2% discount when you pay for the academic year upfront. However, for everyone else, there’s the option of paying in three instalments to make things easier. We’ve ever-so-thoughtfully planned these expected payment dates to coincide with the typical student loan payment schedule, but you can have a chat with us if this doesn’t quite match your student loan payment dates and we’ll see what we can do to help.

At the point of booking, all we need is a £200 booking fee to secure your room, together with details of a Guarantor for all UK students plus those looking to pay their rent in instalments. Your first instalment of rent won’t be due until the first day of your contract.

      Extending your stay

Can’t get enough of Liberty Living? We don’t blame you! But seriously, if you want to stay a little longer than you originally expected, have a chat with your Residence Team about how we can help. We offer summer bookings in all of our accommodation too so you can stick around a while longer to enjoy everything the city or town has to offer. Perhaps you’re staying for further study, or maybe you just want the opportunity to have some fun while you don’t have lectures – either way, we’d be happy to have you here providing we have the space.

We also allow you to come back year after year with some great discounts when you rebook. Talk to us if you’re pretty sure you’re not ready to leave and we’ll give you all the information you need.

    Enhancing your Student Experience

We understand that University can sometimes be an overwhelming experience, but don’t worry our team are great at giving advice on and mediating in all kinds of welfare issues that you may experience, such as homesickness, difficulty in getting on with flatmates, noise complaints, relationship problems, partying too hard and having trouble with studies.

Also, if you need more guidance, we have great relationships with our University partners and their support departments to help and guide you.

The best choice for international students

Coming to the UK to study from abroad? Welcome! We love catering to students from all over the world and learning a thing or two about their culture. Luckily, we’ve already got plenty of experience with this as we currently have around 4,500 international students staying with us, so you’re certainly not alone.

When you stay with Liberty Living your safety is the most important thing to us. We understand that you’re a long way from home and you want to feel comfortable and secure at all times. We have amazing staff on hand 24 hours a day, from the Residence Team, right through to Security who’ll keep an eye out for you overnight as well as CCTV. Contents insurance covering your possessions is included as standard in your rent, so your stuff is protected, and any parcels you have delivered will be well looked after until you can come to collect them.

Of course, we want you to have fun and make the most of your time here, too. You can always come to us with any problems,, or even just for a chat. A new country can be confusing, so we’ve got loads of tips for things to do, too – just ask! Many of our staff members are multilingual, so don’t be shy if English isn’t your first language; if we can’t immediately offer support in your native tongue, we’ll point you in the direction of someone who can. We’ll do our best to help you settle in and make friends, and we can point you in the right direction for any visa, welfare or University advice you may need.

We can’t wait to meet you!
