  1. Social scenes

Manchester has over 400 pubs, clubs and bars in and around the city centre, and Liberty Point is located in the centre of it all, so you’ll never be bored when it comes to nightlife.

If you aren’t in the mood to cook, Manchester has a variety of restaurants which are diverse and range in cuisines from all over the world.

There are many restaurants in the Northern Quarter Manchester, the fashionable, quirky area of the city centre – just 15 minutes’ walk away and crammed with places to eat. Some tasty favourites include; Dough Pizza Kitchen, Simple, Cane and Grain, and Wood Deli and Wine Bar. The city centre is also home to a variety of national chain restaurants to suit everyone, including; Nando’s, TGI Friday’s, Frankie and Benny’s and many more.

The city also boasts one of the largest Chinatowns in the UK, a curry mile in Rusholme – 10 minute drive away and Canal Street (Manchester’s very own Gay Village). The Arndale Shopping Centre has a variety of places to eat and drink inside. There is also the fantastic Rice Bar and Grill – 10 minutes away.

Manchester has it all when it comes to nightlife; there is literally something for everyone so you won’t be disappointed. Being positioned in the city centre means you will be so close to the numerous entertainment venues on offer, the most popular areas being; Canal Street (Manchester’s Gay Village), Deansgate Locks – 10 minute walk and the trendy Northern Quarter – 15 minutes’ walk away.

With two of the biggest universities, there is no wonder that the student life in Manchester is epic. Some of the city’s best nightclubs are; Tiger Tiger – 8 rooms of fun, Gorilla – introducing DJs each week, Factory 251 – 1p entry, or 42nd Street – a popular indie club. Manchester is also famous for ‘The Warehouse Project’. The event takes place each year from September through to New Year’s Day and plays host to an array of International famous DJs.

  2. What's around

Located on Berry Street, Liberty Point is a few moments for Manchester Piccadilly train station and also minutes from the city centre. There is plenty to see and do in Manchester to keep you entertained anytime you fancy. There’s always something out there, whatever it may be that you like to do.

Liberty Point is ideally located for students studying at the University of Manchester, but students studying at Manchester Metropolitan University, Salford University and SSR College can also be accommodated here. The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University are both less than a 15 minutes’ walk from the residence.

If you enjoy live shows, comedy, gigs and concerts, the Manchester Arena is the major gig venue in the city – less than 10 minutes’ car ride away. There are loads of others though, no matter what you’re into, and to name but a few there’s Manchester Academy, Sound Control and the Apollo – all a stone’s throw from Liberty Point.

When it comes to shopping, Manchester certainly does it well; the centre offers an extensive range of high street, boutiques and designer shops. Manchester is home to large department stores; Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and House of Fraser. You really shouldn’t avoid a visit to the Trafford Centre (one of the largest indoor shopping centres in Europe). It’s a 25 minute taxi ride, just out of the city centre.

Something to look forward to is the ‘Pangaea’ festival which is run twice a year by the University of Manchester Students Union. The festival is a large celebration marking the end of exams – featuring famous guests. Other seasonal attractions include; Manchester’s Christmas Markets (some of the best in the UK) featuring ice skating and hundreds of quaint stalls.

The hugely famous Parklife Festival also runs each year and is 10 minutes away from the residence.

For something more cultural, visit the Manchester Museum; 15 minutes’ walk from Liberty Point and run by the University of Manchester. Its free entry and displays works of archaeology, anthropology and natural history.

There are numerous cinemas around the city including the Cornerhouse on Oxford Street – 15 minutes’ walk away, which has 3 screens, an art gallery and a cafe. Manchester is home to a number of theatres, like the Royal Exchange Theatre Company, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé Orchestra,

If you enjoy the outdoors, visit Hulme Park; it’s just 10 minutes’ walk from the residence and perfect to relax in between and after lectures. Why not have a game of Frisbee with friends?

  3. Getting active

If you like to keep fit, there are many gyms close by which offer student discounts and great rates. The nearest gym to the accommodation is Bannatynes on Whitworth Street – 10 minutes’ walk away. Additionally there is a PureGym on Great Ancoats Street – 15 minutes’ walk from Liberty Point.

Fancy splashing around? You can dive right in at the Aquatics Centre, which is located less than a 5 minute walk from the residence. It features an Olympic sized swimming pool which was used during the Commonwealth Games, so you’re in the right place for all things water related.

Alternatively, there are plenty of open spaces located south of Manchester if you like running or jogging. Why not try the weekly Park Run at Hulme Park? It’s free and only 10 minutes from Liberty Point. At just a hop, skip and a jump away, you’ve got no excuse not to challenge your flatmates to a race!

The big question on everyone’s lips in Manchester is; ‘are you red or are you blue?’ There’s plenty of friendly rivalry as both Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs are based in the city. Old Trafford (Manchester United’s ground) is approximately 30 minutes bus ride away and Etihad Stadium (Manchester City’s ground) is around 15 minutes away by bus. You should leap at the chance to see a derby game – the atmosphere is electric, but you could cut the tension with a knife!

  4. Travel and transport

Liberty Point is located a few moments away from Manchester Piccadilly train and bus station, making popping home on the weekends an easy task. The city is well served by bus, train and tram and Manchester is just over 1 hour away from Newcastle, and 2 hours away from London.

The bus system in the city is cheap and reliable; you’ll find a free bus shuttle system which runs through the city centre and buses numbers 1&3 and go to all main spots in and around the city centre.

For a cheaper alternative, the National Express and the Megabus serve Manchester and go to many UK destinations for a low priced reasonable fare.

The city also has a lack of hills, which means walking and cycling around can be done simply.

For those who live outside the UK; Manchester International Airport is a 20 minute drive away, just south of the city. The airport offers a range of widespread routes across the world.

  5. Local amenities

Liberty Point is conveniently located by a range of supermarkets, making it easy to keep your cupboards fully stocked up. Piccadilly station is a few moments’ walk away and has a Sainsbury’s and a Marks and Spencer supermarket, which are each open 7 days a week until late into the evening.

Alternatively, for a larger selection, you may want to visit Asda in Hulme; 5 minutes away by taxi, or Aldi Urban Exchange; 10 minutes’ walk away.

Piccadilly station has a large selection of shops, cafes and cash machines. For a choice of high street banks, the centre (just 10 minutes’ walk away) has a variety, including; HSBC, NatWest, Barclay’s, Santander and many more. The city centre also has a Post Office and a Bureau de Change.

The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan both have on-site libraries which are less than 15 minutes’ walk from the residence. Alternatively, you may want some quiet time in the John Ryland’s Library at Deansgate, which is a 10 minute walk away from Liberty Point.

  6. Your wellbeing

You’ll be able to receive free confidential advice regarding finances, careers and general welfare when studying at any of Manchester’s universities. Liberty Point is located close to campus so you will never be too far from the help you may need.

The nearest GP Surgery to the residence is Vallance Centre, less than a 10 minute walk from Liberty Point.

For any emergencies, Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital is a 20 minute walk from the residence and has an A&E unit and a walk-in centre, if you happened to need any urgent medical assistance.
