  1. General information

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is a thriving, world-class conservatoire located in the heart of Manchester, and is the destination of choice for anyone passionate about the arts –specifically being trained in performance arts. The RNCM has a reputation for attracting talented students, teachers, conductors and composers from all over the world.

Students who study at the RNCM will receive world-class training for professional careers in music through a mixture of solo tuition, workshops, ensembles and masterclasses, supported by lectures, seminars and individual academic tutorials.

There are around 800 students studying at RNCM each year, supported by around 450 staff so it’s an intimate experience where you will receive strong support throughout your studies.

Naturally performance sits at the heart of the student experience at the RNCM. You will have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of performance activities including orchestral projects, opera, session orchestra, big band, chamber music and smaller-scale solo and duo opportunities. RNCM students also get the opportunity to perform to a public audience through their weekly lunchtime concerts in their 610 capacity Concert Hall.

In short, it offers an unrivalled learning experience that develops the skills needed for you to become a professional musician.

The RNCM offers its students that little bit extra, and when you stay in our RNCM accommodation, we do exactly the same thing.

  2. The campus

The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) is proud to be located in the world-leading city of Manchester, a centre for classical and contemporary music. The College and their staff, and students, are an integral part of the vibrant music scene in Manchester.

The tuition is top-class, so why shouldn’t the campus be, too? The facilities at the RNCM are among some of the best in Europe and a lot of investment has gone into these to ensure that they remain competitive.

As a purpose-built conservatoire, you will have access to excellent facilities, including world-class performance venues and a wealth of learning resources. In 2014, the RNCM completed a £7.1m development project to improve and expand the College’s diverse teaching, study, rehearsal and performance activities.

For a start, the performance spaces at RNCM host hundreds of events per year to the adoring public in Manchester. The Platform is the RNCM’s international centre for ensemble and vocal training which provides over 400 opportunities each year for students to participate in auditions, rehearsals, education projects and public performances in the UK and Mainland Europe.

Over the past decade, the RNCM has established strong partnerships with the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras, Manchester Camerata, the Black Dyke Band and Opera North.

Now the College is proud to add the Academy of Ancient Music, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, European Chamber Academy, Foden’s Band, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Netherlands Wind Ensemble, KorVest and the Orchestra of Opera North to the list, making The Platform one of the most sought-after schemes offered by a conservatoire.

The RNCM accommodation that we provide puts you at the heart of Manchester as well as right on the doorstep of where the campus magic happens, so you can make the most of your student experience.

  3. Undergraduate study

If you’re looking to embark upon your first degree, choosing an undergraduate programme that is the right level for you is essential.

At the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) the undergraduate degrees have a completely vocational emphasis and you will learn to be not only proficient but at the top of your game.

The degree experience is different to other institutions – you already know your subject inside out in order to be accepted, but you attend this prestigious institution to fine-tune your skills and develop professional ones, too.

The RNCM offers programmes for both Classical and Popular Music students, and within the Classical programme, there is also the option for students to specialise in jazz and brass studies.

When you study your first degree here, you’ll be supported by around 450 staff meaning you’ll be given intensive one-to-one tuition, and of course, a challenging but fun learning environment to really put your skills, creativity and drive to the test.

You’ll be kept in regular contact with professional counterparts in your industry, so that you can really get on their radar. These relationships will be established thanks to opportunities provided by the RNCM.

When you stay at our RNCM accommodation you’ll be able to meet the exciting demands which will be placed upon you whilst still getting to enjoy all the fun of being a student, and the experience it offers.

  4. Postgraduate study

The RNCM Graduate School is a superb environment to pursue advanced studies in performance arts, including conducting, composition, musicology, music psychology, and music education.

RNCM’s programmes are highly flexible and are carefully tailored to prepare you for the specific goals of your chosen career path, whether it is to be a professional performer or composer, music educator, researcher, community artist or – like an increasing number of successful graduates – an all-round expert musician.

You can study plenty of postgraduate Masters Programmes, which are often internationally recognised. From Master of Music, Master of Performance to Conducting – the choice is yours.

The RNCM’s desire to be outstanding is unrivalled, and there’s a real desire to provide the most qualified of students with the best possible assistance and support.

You’ll be studying at one of the best institutions for continuing your development in the arts, so it only makes sense that you choose the best home to stay in whilst you attend – and our RNCM accommodation allows you to achieve your full potential.
