A great place to study
Medway, the South Eastern city in Kent, is a collection of towns steeped in history, and today it proudly merges its naval and military history with a bustling modern front. With its castles and culture, the 250,000 strong city has plenty to do for its residents and visitors alike.
With plenty of exciting attractions and its proximity to London, your time in our Medway student accommodation will be filled with fun, and the cosiness of the campus will make you feel right at home in no time!
Food and drink
Like the city itself, Medway seamlessly blends a mix of old and new in its delicious, mouth-watering food options. All tastes are catered to, and there’s an abundance of lunchtime deals located all around, which is perfect for a student budget.
Dotted around the city, you’ll find some brilliant traditional pubs and The Ship and Trades is just one of them. For the best student-loan friendly prices, you’ll want The Rochester Bar. Try the Rochester Cathedral Tea Rooms and Gardens for a lovely spot of afternoon tea. Tony Lorenzo’s is a delight for sandwiches, and for something a little heartier, trendy Zippers is the place to be.
Make sure to head back to rediscover your favourite restaurants over the summer months – dining ‘al fresco’ on the streets is an absolute must.
Sports and leisure
If you’re into sport, then you’ll need to get acquainted with Medway Park right next to our Gillingham student accommodation. It’s an incredible multi-sport centre, which has recently undergone an £11 million transformation.
Each year, sport fans can celebrate their skills and talents with the Medway Festival of Sport, promoting a healthier lifestyle for all. Active participation is encouraged!
Culture and music
Medway has been a significant town to England throughout the ages, and there’s plenty of evidence of this all over, no matter where you look.
With roots in maritime and naval history, the Historic Dockyard Chatham is worth a look around, and for a spot of reminiscing, the St George’s Centre hosts memorials to those who lost their lives on the ships in the world wars. Rochester was an important crossing point for the Romans, which is why Rochester Castle, guarding the shores, is so impressive. It’s not the only one though. Check out Fort Amherst or Upnor Castle as well.
The Brook Theatre offers an exciting plethora of entertainment for fans of all kinds of shows and plays, but if it’s music you’re after, you won’t feel left out. Student bar Coopers hosts a regular Rockaoke (Karaoke with a rock band!), and quirky little venue Poco Loco allows you to sample the local talent. Check out The Barge and Beacon Court Tavern, too, for a really intimate live music experience in each.
Located within the Liberty Quays complex is the University of Kent’s very own Cargo bar, open to students as well as the general public.
Medway’s nightlife is exciting, with loads of different pubs and clubs, perfect for the student budget. Give Tap’N’Tin a try – it’s bound to suit everyone in your Liberty Living flat, as it’s got three floors, each with totally different music. Sure, it’s a little grimy, but Monday nights have the cheapest drinks around town, so you really can’t go wrong.
Student pub Coopers has a late license, making it ideal for a student night out, and Casino Rooms has your Thursday night covered.
Medway is served by five train stations, making getting out and beyond more than easy.
There’s also a great local bus network, with frequent, cheap services taking you anywhere you might need to go.
Medway is a pleasant area to walk around, but on the days where you just don’t fancy it, there are plenty of trustworthy taxis all over the city to get you from A to B.
Health and wellbeing
Your health is our number one priority, and luckily, you’re in good hands in Medway.
Medway Maritime Hospital will look after you should you ever need it, and there’s a wealth of other services for anything you might need throughout the area. All of the Medway’s universities take care of their students, and you can get help with anything that’s troubling you, from financial woes through to emotional problems.
Of course, the staff at Liberty Living are on hand to lend an ear as well if you ever just need a chat.
Shopping in Medway is generally exciting, with a mix of shopping centres and all your favourite retailers dotted along the high street.
Our Gillingham student accommodation is located right next to a cluster of local amenities including a cash machine, Tesco Express store, Subway and Dominos Pizza.
There is a brand new ASDA superstore on Pier Road. It's a 5 minute walk away, and it's huge enough to grab all your bargains for the coming weeks!
For something exciting to do right on your doorstep, it’s got to be London. With its amazing landmarks, famous skyline and a world of things to see and do, you’d be crazy for not making the most of its proximity, roughly 45 minutes away by train.
Of course, Kent is also famous for many other notable towns, including Canterbury and Margate to name just two. The classic Canterbury Tales have literature fans flocking, whilst the latter brings in a roaring tourist trade to its traditional English beaches.
Whatever you are looking for, you will find it with Liberty Living in Medway.

Liberty Living operates in accordance with the National Code of Standards for student accommodation. The Code of Standards is run by ANUK (The Accreditation Network UK), the NUS, and Unipol Student Homes, and is supported by universities across the UK.
Liberty Living joined the Code of Standards to give our students peace of mind. You can be assured that you will enjoy a high standard of living in accordance with the Code of Standards, and a prompt resolution to problems should they ever occur when you stay at any of Liberty Living’s residences.
Liberty Living follow a distinct set of standards for our student accommodation, called the ANUK/Unipol National Codes. The purpose of these Codes, (membership of which is voluntary), is to provide students with professional housing services.
The standards chosen for the Codes reflect a balance of common sense obligations and responsibilities between landlords and tenants. They also reflect established best practice in the sector and are based on what an average student and their parents would expect of a good quality housing supplier. The standards are supported by the voice of students themselves through the National Union of Students.
What does being a member of the codes mean?
- Both parties can enjoy the benefits of good standards of housing management and practice.
- Misunderstandings and disputes are reduced.
- If problems do occur they can be promptly resolved.
- The independent complaints procedure operated by the Codes can be used for complaint resolution.
