Newcastle for students

Newcastle is considered one of the friendliest cities in the UK, and there’s always a warm welcome extended to students. Newcastle proudly boasts a few fantastic institutions, and our student residences are located near to all of them. Whether you find yourself at Newcastle University, Northumbria University or Newcastle College, prepare yourself for a brilliant student experience.

Eating out

Good food isn’t hard to come by in Newcastle, with plenty of cafés and restaurants to feast your eyes on (and feast at, quite literally). These include everything from chicken shops to Persian restaurants, and plenty more in between. Vegetarians and vegans don’t have to settle for less either, with popular establishments throughout the city, and even a pub called the ‘Ship Inn‘ which offers a fully vegan menu.

Chinatown is located to the west of the city, close to some of our student housing options in Newcastle, so you’ll be able to find plenty of diverse cuisine there as well. And if you like to stay ahead of the game, Quayside is one of Newcastle’s most on-the-pulse areas, so it’s a great place to head out and try new food.

Things to do

It doesn’t matter what you’re into, you’ll have an abundance of choice when it comes to things to do in Newcastle. Fancy a trip to the city centre to see the latest flick at the cinema? There are several of them, and they’re not all simply run-of-the-mill.

Newcastle city centre is compact, meaning getting around at day or night won't be a problem. There is much to offer students, from retail therapy on Northumberland Street by day, to taking part in Newcastle's student-friendly social scene at night.

If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned night out to let your hair down, Newcastle’s renowned for being the best. Don’t worry; it’s not all about the Geordie Shore… unless you want it to be!

And if you’re anything like the locals, you’ll be fanatical about sport. Football is their passion and Newcastle United FC play at the impressive St James’ Park stadium. It dominates the Newcastle skyline and is a stone’s throw from Liberty Plaza.

Arts & culture

Newcastle has a rep as a party city, but it can offer so much more. Newcastle offers everything a student could need, including the fantastic Quayside, theatres, comedy, and museums. Of course, you can’t stay in Newcastle without admiring the Millennium Bridge, which has great views of the 11th century castle that gave the city its name.

You can also spend your free time exploring Newcastle's diverse arts and culture scene, such as the challenging Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The best part is that you'll find it super easy to explore the city when staying at our Newcastle student accommodation.

And no student city would be complete without a collection of music venues to see the best in established an up-and-coming talent. The O2 Academy and Metro Radio Arena are just two of plenty that you’ll want to explore.

Health & wellbeing

Newcastle has some beautiful outdoor spaces to head off to chill out in, such as Exhibition Park, Leazes Park and Town Moor. The city is considered a great place to walk around, and there’s plenty to see!

The Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport is located close to our student flats in Newcastle and offers performance sport options and more casual exercise classes, such as aerobics and yoga. Alternatively, Eldon Leisure Centre provides superb gym facilities at very student friendly prices.

Like any city, Newcastle has plenty of private gyms on almost every corner, and all of the universities and colleges have facilities as well. You’ll never be too far from somewhere to keep fit at your private student accommodation in Newcastle.

Getting around

Great transport links including the Tyne and Wear Metro make it easy to get around this fantastic city. You can get around using the bus, train or Metro. There are even student tickets that you can use across the entire network!

After a night out, there are plenty of safe taxi services, or you can use ride share services.

Conveniently situated just off the A1 and A19 trunk road, Newcastle is served by regular trains on the London North Eastern Railway. Newcastle is also served by its very own Airport, and there is also a ferry route to Amsterdam from the North Shields International Ferry Terminal. Flatmate holiday, anyone?
