Famed for its football team, galleries, universities and more; it is a City where the past is remembered proudly, and the friendly people speak with arguably the best accent in the British Isles.
Newcastle is one of the UK's leading centres of culture and ancestral home to the World Heritage site of Hadrian's Wall. There are over 42,000 students studying at Newcastle University, Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University and the 2nd largest F.E. College in the country, Newcastle College. Students studying at any of these will find an excellent choice of student accommodation at Liberty Plaza (formerly Central St James and Central Link), Liberty Central, Liberty Quay or Liberty Quay Studios.
Food and drink
If you like good food you’ve got so many options to feast your eyes on in Newcastle with cafés and restaurants in good supply including: Sloppy Joes Deli, Sapori Café, Moulin Rouge Café and Grill, Coop Chicken House, the Broad Chare, Caffe Vivo and the Fat Buddha. Chinatown is located to the west of the city close to some of our Newcastle student accommodation locations.
If your parents are in town and they’re in the mood to splash the cash then either Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill or Artisan would be our top choices and they won’t be left disappointed – just make sure that they bring their wallet or purse with them!
Sports and leisure
Locals are fanatical about sport. Football is their passion and Newcastle United FC play at the impressive St James’ Park stadium which dominates the Newcastle skyline and is a stone’s throw away from Liberty Plaza.
The Centre for Physical Recreation and Sport is located close to our student accommodation and offers both performance sport and more casual exercise classes such as aerobics and yoga.
Culture and music
Newcastle and neighbouring Gateshead are home to the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, bound to both challenge and inspire all who visit. You should also check out the Sage Gateshead, and of course, the Millennium Bridge, which has great views of the 11th century castle that gave the city its name. Newcastle offers everything a student could need, including the fantastic Quayside, theatres, comedy, and museums. Chinatown and the Gate cinema & bars complex are definitely worth a visit and easy to get to and from our student accommodation in Newcastle.
Of course, no student city would be complete without a collection of music venues to see the best in established an up-and-coming talent. The O2 Academy and Metro Radio Arena are just two of plenty that you’ll want to explore.
It doesn’t matter what you’re into, you’ll have an abundance of choice when it comes to entertainment in Newcastle. Whether you fancy a trip to the city centre to see the latest flick at the cinema or somewhere to let your hair down after a long week of studying, you’ll find all of this and more.
Newcastle city centre is compact, meaning getting around at day or night won't be a problem. There is much to offer students, from retail therapy on Northumberland Street by day to taking part in Newcastle's student-friendly social scene at night.
You can also spend your free time exploring Newcastle's diverse arts and culture scene, such as the challenging Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. The best part is that you'll find it super easy to explore the city when staying at our Newcastle student accommodation.
Of course, every student city needs a brilliant social scene and you won’t be disappointed, you’ll have access to many music and entertainment events hosted at the Students' Union every year.
Venturing out into the city centre you’ll find an array of nightclubs, bars and pubs including: Tup Tup Palace, Floritas, Revolution, Toyko, House of Smith, Livello and Perdu to name just a few. Don’t worry; it’s not all about the Geordie Shore…unless you want it to be!
Great transport links including the Tyne and Wear Metro make it easy to get around this fantastic city.
Conveniently situated just off the A1 and A19 trunk road, Newcastle is served by regular trains on the Virgin Trains East Coast mainline.
Newcastle is also served by its very own Airport, and there is also a ferry route to Amsterdam from the North Shields International Ferry Terminal. Now there’s a weekend break with your new flatmates to look forward to!
Health and wellbeing
Newcastle’s universities offer welfare, financial and career advice which is available to all their students at various advice clinics across campus.
Our residences are in close proximity to all the campus departments so students are never far away at all from the help they may need.
Liberty Living’s central student accommodation in Newcastle is in close reach to the Royal Victoria Infirmary which is located opposite the main university campus. The hospital has a GP walk-in service which runs alongside its accident and emergency unit.
Finally, the New Croft Centre offers sexual health advice and family planning services which are situated nearby.
Whilst living in Newcastle you’ll be spoiled for choice with shopping areas a plenty, including the famous Eldon Square shopping centre. The city centre is home to over 150 high street names such as Allsaints and Hollister, and flagship stores for River Island and Topshop. The Metrocentre in Gateshead is also home to 340 shops and restaurants so you can shop till you drop if you’ve got the stamina.
You’ll find a Tesco and Sainsbury’s supermarket, as well as a range of smaller food shops and takeaways just a short distance from your Newcastle student accommodation.
The city centre is home to all the high street banks and shops that you’d expect in a popular University city plus useful amenities like a Post Office and convenience stores.
Newcastle is situated in the North East of England and its location means that its only one-and-a-half-hours from Scotland by train, so if you get the chance Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh are well worth a visit.
Within half an hour’s drive to the east of Newcastle and with more than 30 miles of beaches lies the Northumberland Coast which is simply spectacular. Promenade along piers, play at penny arcades and tuck into fish and chips whilst enjoying the sea view at retro-chic seaside towns. Discover picturesque fishing communities, clustered around sandy coves, like Newton-by-the-Sea, or head on out to Newbiggin Bay, where you’ll even experience a seaside village making artistic waves with Britain’s first permanent coastal sculpture.
Nearby Northumberland also has more castles than any other county in England, so if you fancy pretending to be a King or Queen for the day, make sure you venture out.
Within half an hour’s drive to the west of Newcastle lies Hexham, voted England’s favourite market town, and the majesty of Kielder Water & Forest Park which is not only home to the biggest man-made lake in Northern Europe, but also the largest working forest in England – it’s definitely worth a visit. City life doesn’t have to mean you can’t see the wonders of nature around you!

Our dedicated Student Experience programme has been created to ensure that every single one of you has the best stay possible when you live with us. Whether it is coming along to our social events and activities to meet new people, getting involved in fundraising and volunteering for some amazing charities, or popping along to drop in sessions to seek advice on finances, wellbeing and careers, we have something for you.
We understand that University can sometimes be an overwhelming experience, but don’t worry our team are great at giving advice on and mediating in all kinds of welfare issues that you may experience, such as homesickness, difficulty in getting on with flatmates, noise complaints, relationship problems, partying too hard and having trouble with studies.

Liberty Living operates in accordance with the National Code of Standards for student accommodation. The Code of Standards is run by ANUK (The Accreditation Network UK), the NUS, and Unipol Student Homes, and is supported by universities across the UK.
Liberty Living joined the Code of Standards to give our students peace of mind. You can be assured that you will enjoy a high standard of living in accordance with the Code of Standards, and a prompt resolution to problems should they ever occur when you stay at any of Liberty Living’s residences.
Liberty Living follow a distinct set of standards for our student accommodation, called the ANUK/Unipol National Codes. The purpose of these Codes, (membership of which is voluntary), is to provide students with professional housing services.
The standards chosen for the Codes reflect a balance of common sense obligations and responsibilities between landlords and tenants. They also reflect established best practice in the sector and are based on what an average student and their parents would expect of a good quality housing supplier. The standards are supported by the voice of students themselves through the National Union of Students.
What does being a member of the codes mean?
- Both parties can enjoy the benefits of good standards of housing management and practice.
- Misunderstandings and disputes are reduced.
- If problems do occur they can be promptly resolved.
- The independent complaints procedure operated by the Codes can be used for complaint resolution.
