  1. Social scenes

    Southampton is vibrant city bursting with culture, with an exciting social scene. There are a range of different bars, restaurants and pubs in and around the city to keep you occupied in your spare time and during weekends.

    Nightlife in Southampton has a great reputation, with most students visiting the well-known club Oceana; 10 minutes’ walk from Liberty Quays. Other popular nightclubs include Junk and EDM; Southampton’s popular gay club.

    The city centre and Oxford Street have a range of bars including; Yates, Orange Rooms and Turtle Bay, which are a hit amongst students.

    Being so close to the city centre there are tons of different places to eat, catering for all differing tastes. Some popular favourite hotspots include Mango Thai, Shrimp & Burger, Milan Italian, La Tavernetta and 7Bone Burger.

    There is also a large selection of national chain restaurants to enjoy, including; Nando’s, Bella Italia, Wagamama and more. If you like ice cream and delicious desserts, you will need to visit the famous Sprinkles Gelato in the city centre, it won’t disappoint!

  2. What's around

    Liberty Quays is ideally suited for students studying at Southampton Solent University and the University of Southampton. The city centre is a 15 minute walk from the residence and both universities can be easily reached by bus or foot.

    Shopping enthusiasts are well catered for, so don’t panic! WestQuay Shopping Centre has over 100 stores spread over three levels, with big name brands. It’s not only a retailer – there are lots of places you eat in the new ‘Dining at WestQuay’, and it’s less than a 20 minute walk from the accommodation.

    As well as the high street brands, Southampton has a range of markets around the city. Street foods, crafts and continental treats are just some of the typical stalls you may see dotted around the place.

    The city has three cinemas showcasing all the latest movies, including the multi-screen at the Odeon at Leisure World and UGC at Ocean Village, just a 10 minute walk away. The Harbour Lights Picture House is an independent cinema and it’s under a 15 minute walk from your new student accommodation.

    Alternatively, if you enjoy the theatre; the Mayflower Theatre is 15 minutes’ walk away and hosts shows which include ballet, panto, opera and comedy.

    The Titanic disaster of 1912 had a huge impact on the people of Southampton with hundreds of people sadly losing family members. The SeaCity Museum in the city centre is a well worth a visit, and looks into the history of the ship and the crew members on board.

    If you like to relax after your lectures, take a walk around Southampton Common; it’s just 10 minutes’ drive away. The Common currently includes 326 acres of woodland and loads of beautiful scenery and things to do.

    If it’s art and history you enjoy, Southampton centre is bursting with it. Visit the Southampton City Art Gallery for contemporary pieces, or the Medieval Merchant’s House built in the 13th century – well worth a visit!

  3. Getting active

    If you like to keep fit, there are a variety of gyms located around Southampton. The closest to Liberty Quays is located on Southampton Solent University campus, a 10 minute walk away. There is also a gym located on The University of Southampton campus for their students. Alternatively, the nearest private gym is The Gym in the city centre. It's only a 5 minute walk away, offering affordable gym rates for students.

    For fans of professional sport, Southampton Football Club is based at Friends Provident St. Mary’s Stadium; less than a 20 minute walk away from the residence. As well as this, Hampshire County Cricket Club is based at the Rose Bowl; less than a 20 minute drive away.

    Water sports are very popular as you might imagine with being right on the coast. You can experience yachting and windsurfing on the Solent, plus, watch out for the annual boat show – the biggest in Europe!

    If you’re feeling adventurous, visit the dry ski slopes at The Alpine Snowsports Centre – 10 minutes’ walk from Liberty Quays. The centre caters for all types of winter sports and is a great day out for everyone.

  4. Travel and transport

    Liberty Quays is located on Duke Street, on the doorstep of Southampton Marina, and close to the city centre where you will find good transport links to get in and out the city.

    The city has a great bus system, with student Uni-Link bus services connecting the campus and key areas of the city together for a small price. There is a Uni Link bus stop for links to the Southampton University campus at dock gate 4 just a few minutes from Liberty Quays. The coach station is also near the city centre for those who use Mega Bus and National Express to get to other parts of the UK.

    The main train station is located in 20 minutes’ walk away from the residence. Southampton is 1 hour and 15 minutes away from London and Bournemouth in less than 30 minutes.

    Southampton International Airport is located under 15 minutes away by car and offers flights to UK and European destinations. Additionally Red Funnel Ferries provide a regular service from Southampton Quay to the Isle of Wight, for a fun day out.

  5. Local amenities

    Liberty Quays is located around a large range of local amenities, which means popping to the shops for all your essentials can be done easily.

    Next door to the residence you will find a Co-Operative store, selling all necessary items to keep you going. For a larger selection of goods, there is a larger Asda and Lidl located in the city centre – 10 minutes’ walk from the residence.

    All local banks can be found in the city centre, 5 minutes’ walk from Liberty Quays, and include HSBC, NatWest, Santander and many more. The city centre also has a Post Office and Bureau de Change.

    Both University campuses have on-site library facilities with all resources you will need throughout your time studying. The nearest alternative library to those found on each University campus would be the one found in the Civic Centre which is only a 10 minute walk away.

  6. Your wellbeing

    You'll be able to get free and confidential advice regarding finances, careers and general welfare when studying at any of Southampton’s universities. Liberty Quays is located close to campus so you’ll never be too far from the help you may need.

    The nearest GP Surgery to the residence is St Mary’s Surgery – 10 minutes’ walk from Liberty Quays.

    For any emergencies, Southampton Hospital has an A&E department and is a 10 minute drive from the residence if you ever need any urgent medical assistance. We hope you don’t, but it’s a good idea to let you know.

    At Liberty Quays you will never be far from the help you may need. The Residence Team are on-site 24 hours a day to guide or assist you throughout your time with us.

    We understand that University can sometimes be an overwhelming experience, but don’t worry our team are great at giving advice on and mediating in all kinds of welfare issues that you may experience, such as homesickness, difficulty in getting on with flatmates, noise complaints, relationship problems, partying too hard and having trouble with studies.

    Coming to the UK to study from abroad? Welcome! We love catering to students from all over the world and learning a thing or two about their culture. Luckily, we’ve already got plenty of experience with this as we currently have around 4,500 international students staying with us, so you’re certainly not alone.

    When you stay with Liberty Living your safety is the most important thing to us. We understand that you’re a long way from home and you want to feel comfortable and secure at all times. We have amazing staff on hand 24 hours a day, from the Residence Team, right through to Security who’ll keep an eye out for you overnight as well as CCTV. Contents insurance covering your possessions is included as standard in your rent, so your stuff is protected, and any parcels you have delivered will be well looked after until you can come to collect them.

    Of course, we want you to have fun and make the most of your time here, too. You can always come to us with any problems, or even just for a chat. A new country can be confusing, so we’ve got loads of tips for things to do, too – just ask! Many of our staff members are multilingual, so don’t be shy if English isn’t your first language; if we can’t immediately offer support in your native tongue, we’ll point you in the direction of someone who can. We’ll do our best to help you settle in and make friends, and we can point you in the right direction for any visa, welfare or University advice you may need.

    We suggest that you take some time to read it carefully – we created it to help make your stay as comfortable as possible.

    Please note that this document works alongside, and forms a part of, your Tenancy Agreement or Summer Licence Agreement that you need to accept before you move into your accommodation.

    Liberty Living has arranged contents insurance for you, inside your room – with Endsleigh.

    It is important for you to check this cover, so please follow the steps below to ensure that you fully understand the protection provided.

    Your policy number is HH1088, follow the link to check your policy details and to download your 'Certificate of insurance'.

    We hope you won’t need it but it’s nice to know that you have insurance as backup for your peace of mind.
