  1. A great place to study

Stoke-on-Trent has a fair few names under its belt! For example, it's also referred to as The Potteries, but more commonly simply ‘Stoke’. It's is a Northern city in the heart of Staffordshire. Thought to be the home of pottery, and with many coal mines in the area, it’s an industrial city which has thoroughly modernised in recent years.

Stoke-on-Trent might be small, but its size allows for a sense of community among the students that just isn’t possible in larger cities.

The two universities in the area are Keele University and the two campus Staffordshire University which is a stone's throw away from our student accommodation.

  2. Food and drink

Stoke has a wide selection of tasty treats to suit everyone. For a hearty mix of old and new, you’ll want to give the Orange Tree Bar & Grill a go, or for locally sourced produce, The Old Swan will be right up your street. If you prefer to splash out a little, Harecastle Farm’s Miller & Carter steakhouse is ideal. Going in the daytime will save you plenty of pennies, too, as they’ve a fixed price two course lunch that won’t break the bank.

If Indian food is more your thing, try Sanjeev’s, and for Latin American cuisine, it’s got to be Hector Garcia’s.

Vegetarians also shouldn’t feel left out; The Big Strawberry is the ethical alternative you’ve been looking for.

It’s also impossible to mention Stoke’s food without mentioning its world-famous Staffordshire Oatcakes. To sample one for yourself, head to TJ’s Oatcakes & Sandwich Bar, which is widely renowned for having some of the tastiest around!

  3. Sports and leisure

If you’re into your sports, there’s loads of fun things to appeal to you right here in Stoke.

Fenton Manor Sports Complex is the premier destination between Manchester and Birmingham, with its indoor sports arenas and more.

The city also has two football teams – Stoke City and Port Vale, and a trip to cheer on your new team is more than recommended!

Central Forest Park’s Skate Plaza is the UK’s largest street-style skate park if that’s your thing, and for climbers, you can head on out to Kilnworx Climbing Centre.

  4. Culture and music

As the World Capital of Ceramics, Stoke is affectionately labelled ‘The Potteries’. There are plenty of opportunities to discover more about its heritage during your stay here, with plenty of Pottery attractions and even factory tours.

If you’re after something a bit livelier, then a trip to one of the many theatres in the city might be more up your street. Of course, for a more casual entertainment experience, you can catch all the latest releases at either the Odeon or Vue cinema.

You’ll be pleased to know that Stoke isn’t left off many band’s touring schedules. With the Sugarmill, Victoria Hall and The Underground, you’ll be blessed with many live music haunts, perfect for spotting new talent or catching up with all your favourites.

  5. Local entertainment

You absolutely can’t come to Stoke without making the most of Alton Towers theme park. As one of the UK’s biggest and best, you’ll enjoy an abundance of rides including the likes of 'Air' and 'Oblivion'. Head at Halloween for extra fun – their haunted houses are the best around.

For nightlife, you’re treated to some of the best student-friendly chains around, such as Rift & Co and Aussie themed Walkabout.

If you’re a little bit alternative, The Sugarmill is going to be the place for you, and for a fun ‘throwback’ type of evening, head down to Reflex.

  6. Getting around

With over 150km of cycle routes around the city, a move to Stoke may well be what you’ve needed to get in shape.

Don’t worry, if you can’t think of anything worse, there are also plenty of buses which will get you to and from our Stoke student accommodation.

Trains serve the area nicely, too, with its very own rail station, and the city is on National Express routes.

  7. Health and wellbeing

Your health will be more than looked after in Stoke, with a wealth of care being offered by the universities and the city itself.

Royal Stoke University Hospital serves the area, along with a range of general practices and more, should you need them.

Your University can offer career and financial advice to all those who need it, as well as direction on what to do in times of emotional crisis.

  8. Local amenities

Our Stoke student accommodation is located next to all of your essentials for a comfortable life here in the city.

For example, you’ll find leading supermarkets throughout the city, as well as banks and other amenities that you might expect.

Stoke is also well served by an array of takeaways, so there’s always something to tide you over when you’re feeling a bit peckish.

  9. Further afield

In Stoke, you’ll be spoiled for choice for places to head off to in your downtime.

It’s located less than an hour from Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Nottingham, meaning you’ll never be short of somewhere fun to venture off to.

Liverpool, famous for The Beatles and its impressive waterfront is an ideal choice to visit when your parents come to stay, and Manchester is yet another impressive Northern city nearby.

If London strikes your fancy, you can reach it in just an hour and a half, and there are regular half hourly services throughout the day.

Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands and Liverpool each have their own airports, too, so if you fancy jetting off further afield, it’s no trouble at all.
